Going from specialist to manager

Top Gun Maverick

In Top Gun: Maverick (2022), the main character chooses to grow his career as a specialist rather than a manager.

He gathers awards, he’s a good specialist, but the benefits of a manager are more.

I think of several examples in real life in which, when going to be a manager, in order to be liked by others, you have to be a bit two-faced – politicians, for example.

Specialists may have some standards, but this might make them difficult to work with.

They might have some personal rules that are not suited for others.

For example, they could impose high standards on themselves and small standards on others. That’s fine when you don’t work in a team, but not when you lead/manage others.

On Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

Top Gun Maverick

About Top Gun: Maverick (2022):

  • A rather cool movie.
  • Great images; the sound was more than fine.
  • The actors played well.
  • Good script.
  • Nice balance between very futuristic planes and old planes. Also – very new technology vs. old technology.
  • Also, good balance between old and new actors/characters.
  • It’s not a perfect 10, but it’s more than a 9.

Price cuts

Thomas Hawk - No Frills Price

Let’s say you offer three services: 150, 100, and 50 USD for each.

A client comes and asks for a discount.

You could consider offering prices like these: 100, 67, 33 USD. (total discount: 100 USD)

But a better solution would be to give the first service bought no discount, the second one 33 USD and the third one 67 USD. (total discount: 100 USD)

This way, if the project stops abruptly, you do get paid almost fully.

In the first version suggested above, if you stop the project at any given time, you have given a discount without the project being completed.

In the second version, you only give a good discount if/when the project ends.

How to network?

Furnizori servicii recomandați

Some people, when they think of „networking,” think of an awkward state in which they have to present themselves, push an offer, make a statement, and be visible. Most of the time, in a forced and „cringe” (definition).

How about another criterion? Make yourself useful.

Help, offer help, be out there, and be present in one way or another.

To me, being useful is the most important criterion in networking and business.

Writing on various subjects

Björn - Typewriter

„Why do I write many things on the blog?”, and also – „Why do I share many links at once?”.

I think that it helps with my development.

The blog you read is mostly meant for me.

Sure, I censor some of my thoughts.

Also, I post things that I expect others to like.

But, all in all, it’s a blog by me for me.

Now, on the question of „Why do I write?”, the answer is simple – to clarify my thoughts.

The hero image in movies – on Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

"Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015) - The ninth movie I like a lot

In movies (especially action movies), a hero needs to show vulnerability according to Chris Stuckmann:

An example is „Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015):

A lot of movies have the „Superman issue,” as I like to call it – the hero is perfect, with no vulnerability, no issues, no faults.

A hero with faults is a better hero, in my opinion.

Action and inaction

Dave Sutherland - Lights, Camera, Action!

“I find that the harder I work, the more luck I seem to have.” ― Thomas Jefferson

“Opportunities multiply as they are seized.” ― Sun Tzu

“There’s never enough time to do all the nothing you want.” ― Bill Watterson

I have lots of plans, I plan to do lots of things. Rarely do I have time for most plans I make.

What I noticed is that the more things I do, the more opportunities arise.

And, also, that I want to do some silly things, perhaps not even worth doing in the first place.

Your financial investor profile

Loяena Ortega - money

There’s a personal development speaker in Romania (focused on financial investments) who really pushes determining your personal profile, and based on that profile, you could make a realistic investment strategy.

The issue? Most people don’t start with investing a fortune. As far as I see it, it’s better to just start investing and see how you respond to things.

Are you good with handling rent for a property you invested in?

Do dividends for the company you bought shares at come with a good ratio?

Just splitting 20-30-50 between three main assets is not, in my opinion, the best choice, and just letting life (and mistakes, of course) do their course is the way to go.

My main issue with the principle „from personality we’ll determine an investor profile” is that there are a lot of unknowns – how will you handle a real estate? Do you like the stress of the Stock Exchange? Would you prefer investing in small businesses?
