Small WordPress tip on categories

Let’s say you want to choose some categories for your blog (I wrote in Romanian why you shouldn’t, generally, use tags on WordPress, but, instead, categories – Ce alegi între categorii și etichete pentru articolele WordPress? – Blog de Olivian Breda).

You have three categories:

Category 1

Category 2

Category 3

In my opinion, the best solution is to also have another category,

zzz. Uncategorized

, and have this as a default.

So, when you will post a new article on the blog, you will be forced to pick between categories 1-3.

But, in case you will forget to pick a category, the blog post will automatically be assigned to category „zzz. Uncategorized”.

It will be then easy to see that there’s something wrong, as the category

„zzz. Uncategorized”

, which should have zero articles in it, now has one blog post.

  • Întâi de toate, e nevoie de spirit critic. Nu tot ce recomand e și valid 100%.
  • Apoi, poate fi vorba de dificultăți în implementare. Pot recomanda lucruri care nu se implementează ușor.
  • Mai e și vorba de perspective diferite. E posibil să îmi scape detalii vizibile altora.
  • În fine, lucrurile trebuie prioritizate. Se pornește de la low-hanging fruits, lucrurile din audit ușor de implementat și cu impact puternic, și se încheie cu lucrurile greu de implementat și cu impact mic.

In a portfolio, in my opinion, there should be two things, at the same time:

  • Testimonials / case studies / sample projects – of course, generally people choose to showcase their best results. They’re an important thing to add to a portfolio page.
  • Experience – how many clients, how many years, how much effort – give me some numbers to help me understand what’s your level of expertise.

These two go hand in hand.

You need some case studies, to go deep and make the visitor have an idea of what you can do.

You also need to list your experience, so that the viewer of your portfolio understands what’s your overall knowledge.

Don’t miss either of them.

Google Trends arată astfel de lucruri, dar e un pic anevoios de folosit (trebuie să luați cuvânt cu cuvânt, și nu sunt date precise, ci, cum întrebați, trenduri.

În Google Search Console puteți vedea mai ușor evoluția unor cuvinte, dar sunt doar cuvintele pentru care rankează siteul vostru.

SEO Monitor au un instrument de predicție, e un tool foarte bun, e premium.

Pe de altă parte, predicțiile nu sunt exacte, se pot face estimări, dar nu există garanții.

  • Cred că a fost un tend vizibil ascendent când au început să fie folosite.
  • În prezent, sunt destul de neutru referitor la folosirea lor. Există nișe (produse destinate copiilor; site-uri axate pe umor) unde pot ajuta; există nișe (lucruri serioase, business-uri cu reputație) unde pot face rău.
  • În general, în prezent, le evit, dar dacă văd un text cu emoticoane nu consider neapărat că va afecta negativ rata de conversie

Let’s say you see a message on a web site which disturbs you some way or another, it annoys you, it offends you, you find it immoral, various other things.

You might think it’s a good idea to either take a picture of the screen (quite a non-technical solution), or just hit PrintScreen on a Windows PC and paste it in a Paint image/Microsoft Word document.

The thing is, it can be quite easy to change what you see on the screen, to manipulate the message.

If you’re using Chrome / FireFox / Safari / Edge (and I wonder what else would you use, if you’re in 98% of Internet users), you can read about document.designMode = ‘on’:

As you can see, it’s so easy to change the text in a page, that even if you do take a screenshot, that may not count as a proof for „But that web site, on date X, said Y”.

A better solution is to use an external tool to save the contents of the page and put a time stamp on it.

I will only link to a Google search because this kind of tool needs to be used for a while, and online tools tend to disappear after a while, and I won’t edit this article very soon. So, a Google search »

From time to time, I suggest other people – „Hey, you should write, too! Start a blog! Just start writing, start from somewhere!”.

And, sometimes, I get this reply „But I can’t write 10x better articles than my competition!”.

Starting the logo design from the brand

Let’s say you want to do the visual identity for a brand.

I do SEO, not brand design, but as far as I know, you’ll need to start from the brand values.

First, establish what the brand values are, and what are some brand characteristics, create some general principles for design, and only at the end try to make a nice logo.

If you make a cool-looking logo, it might not reflect your brand.

I think the WordPress logo reflects their brand identity.
