We can do small things with great love

Nick Wood - Small Copper

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Mother Teresa

23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
Matthew 23:23-24 NIV – “Woe to you, teachers of the law and – Bible Gateway

„If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed”

„Make Your Bed” by US Navy Admiral William H McRaven – YouTube.

A lot of focus is on „Let’s do big things”, forgetting to question the small things. Yet, the small things should not be overlooked.

Scanning a card in a non-compatible app

Jonathan Cutrer - iPhone 11 Pro Max

Let’s say you want to scan a card in a non-compatible app on your smartphone.

So, you have an old smartphone, you can’t install app X, but you have a card in there you need to scan.

How to do it?

I found a solution: install the app on a compatible phone, take a screenshot of the card, add the card as an image to the non-compatible smartphone, show the card as an image.

Atypical, but it works fine.

Reading as an exercise

longreach - Books 4541

I think reading is more of an exercise.

It helps you create some circuits, it makes you think in a certain way, it creates the path for dialogue.

It’s certainly not the only way of developing oneself.

You could study, you could work, you could volunteer, you could attend a conference, you could watch a movie.

I like reading, but not as a one-fits-all solution.

On The Office (TV Series 2005–2013)

On The Office (TV Series 2005–2013)

I watched some episodes of The Office (TV Series 2005–2013).

Initially, if left me an image of being a show which has nothing on my taste.

So, I had some preconceptions – „Oh, see this – I don’t like this habit at all”.

After actually seeing a few episodes, I realized I like the shows just for that – the things that annoyed me without seeing the movie are actually the strong points.

Harsh feedback

Hari K Patibanda - A Pair of Wood Sandpipers fighting for the perch

I like this quote a lot:

People who give themselves feedback in the same heartless tone. They don’t hesitate to brutally lash out, because that’s the noise they often hear inside. – Harsh feedback | Seth’s Blog

I find it to be true.

I tend to do this quite a lot.

Sometimes, I give myself harsh feedback, and, at times, I put a mirror in front of others’ eyes.

I do my best to avoid this, lately.

How much does Schema.org matter?

Thomas Hawk - Google

After 6 weeks of collecting test data, we found that the test was positive with 95% confidence. We estimated that the percentage uplift was 3%.

The general consensus in the SEO community is that structured data (or Schema) is important. But, does schema actually improve your rank in search engines? Well, no or at least, not directly. However, while it’s not a ranking factor in itself, schema does indirectly increase your rank on the SERPs (search engine results pages).

Pricing Policy

David Guyler - Best Price

There’s an antivirus solution that has a bit of a strange pricing policy – they have some prices on their own website and other, smaller, prices on various retailer websites, like eMAG.

I thought it was just me noticing this, and perhaps I was wrong, but others saw this, too.

And that’s just strange.

You sell an antivirus trying to protect naive clients from bad things, and you abuse their naivety in other ways.

That’s one twisted model of business.

Small donations

Ted McGrath - 2016 - Vancouver - Gastown - Burning it On

While in the UK, some people used to give money to celebrate people’s birthdays. The sum of money was tiny at times, less than £1.

It made me think – this helps with your inner state of mind „I donated, I’m a good person”.

Even if you don’t give a lot of money, you feel good.

A lot of NGOs ask for small amounts of money, to be paid via SMS – I always wondered why do people choose to only help with €2?

The reason is simple – even if you give a small amount of money, you will feel good – „I helped the society”.

You certainly did, and it’s much better to donate a small amount of money than nothing.

Still, consider doing more.
