Types of energy

Patrick Dirlam - Speed demon

There are just two types of people:

  • Ones who can work on the long run – you give a project to them, and they will do it, in the long run. They like marathons.
  • Ones that prefer to work in sprints – reply quickly, but then forget to continue working on the project. You get a lot of high-intensity tasks, and then – nothing.

The optimal solution?

Choose the middle path.

Why can’t a regular programmer do SEO well, in my opinion?

Mikkel Rønne - Computer keyboard

„Why Can’t a Woman Be More Like a Man?” Rex Harrison:

Generally, a good programmer can know some basic things about SEO.

A programmer turned into an SEO can create wonderful apps (e.g.: Search Analytics for Sheets – Google Workspace Marketplace) or JavaScript/Python scripts.

But a regular programmer would miss the fine details.

SEO looks simple – a few rules to apply.

Yet, when it comes to applying them, there are lots of particularities, and decisions to make.

A lot of basic things in SEO tend to compound, and simple things can become complicated.

Also, even a small mistake in SEO can backfire.

There’s still room for SEO in the market, in my opinion.

Gift picking

GT#2...Off permanently - hanging Xmas gift

On gift picking: why not buy gifts that last a long time – like a trinket or a perfume?

I prefer to buy things that expire fast – some quality food, for example.

If a person doesn’t like your perfume, they are stuck with it for a long time.

If they don’t like the food, in one or two days it will be gone.

I tend to be risk-averse.

Also, I prefer to give vouchers or money as gifts – people can buy whatever they prefer.

„I know better than you what you’d like” is very rarely true.

The middle path

Elias Rovielo - The Salar de Uyuni at 3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above sea level, Oruro & Potosí, Bolivia

Sometimes, when making a decision, it’s important to at least acknowledge, if not follow, the middle path.

See how others are doing, and do a similar thing they do.

It’s not easy, though.

For once, you need the humility to think that you are not better than others.

Then, you need to accept that others’ actions can apply to you.

Also, the power to ignore your own taste.

Even if you pick a minority of people you admire, choosing to apply on your life the middle path from their lives is still a very big challenge.

Sometimes, you’ll cherry-pick – „Here, I go with the majority, here I decide on my own”.

Fishing for compliments

Q Hassan - Only 1 Boat to Go Home

When you ask „How was I?”, you are fishing for compliments.

It’s not easy for a polite person to tell you the truth.

A better question – „What would you do different, next time, if you were me?”.

Or: „How would you do it better next time?”.

Or: „What could I do better, next time?”.

Focus on the future, and start with the assumption you can improve, rather than asking for an overall picture.

Hating

Adam Y Zhang - Love and Hate Relationship

I meet sometimes people who hate what they do.

People whose jobs depend on having a job done. And they hate it.

If you do an activity long enough, you tend to get to hate it.

Still, it’s sad.

That’s why „Follow your passion” might be the wrong piece of advice.

Sure, initially you’ll love your new hobby, but after a while, if you constantly do it, it might make you hate it.

Vice versa, even if you have a boring job, you might still love getting results after putting a lot of work in it.

There are no silver bullets telling you what career to pick, I’m just saying that if you like dancing, you should dance for pleasure.

If you manage to make dancing into a successful career, that’s great, but you could also be an accountant that does dancing as a hobby.

On details

Andrew Nicodemus - magnificent temple

„There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” – Beverly Sills

I like being a detailed person.

If I give you WordPress templates to pick from, I’ll likely not only give you 3 templates but 300.

If I am to give you a piece of advice, I’ll likely give you quite a bit of text.

I might lose some overall picture, in favor of the small detail.

Is it a wrong thing, what I do?

Certainly, it’s tiresome.

And I don’t adapt to the client in front of me, who, perhaps, would prefer the easy path.

Is it a good thing, to always go for the shortcuts?

Well, I tend to think that there really are no shortcuts.
