It’s for your own good!

Thank you note

Some people say: „I did X for your own good.”

The problem with the above quote is that the person did X for their own good, not mine. It’s such a cheesy line.

Some people like to be lied to, and people need to believe in placebos.

But the feeling of being lied to can be heartbreaking.

Examples in my life:

  • „You must be busy; I’ll end the conversation and let you go now …”
  • „It’s good for you to do so, as you already like …”
  • „You lost the project, but this can make you improve your life on aspect X; so, even if you lost now, you could learn Y, and you’ll benefit from it…”

When can you use this technique? When you want to help someone, they might object.

„I’m giving you this object for free” is not as persuasive as „Please take this object; you need it more than me.” It’s not actually a lie, and people might agree with it.

„Take this object; I don’t actually need it; it’s good for you.”

Power and Precision

Ahmer Inam - Power of Ocean

„Power & Precision” was (as far as I remember) the motto of one very interesting person from CHiP forum (now inactive).

I find in life that you need to cover two things: the elephants in the room (that’s power) and the small details (that’s precision).

Both are necessary, like the horse and carriage, like love and marriage, and they interwind.

You need both intense things (power) and extensive solution, with lots of space (precision).

Some things about Stutz (2022)

Stutz 2022

I liked the following about Stutz (2022) documentary movie:

  • I have the same disease, which is avoiding emotion by making jokes. – I tend to do so myself. This really touched me, I thought about this for a while.
  • That’s why you have three aspects of reality that nobody gets to avoid: Pain, uncertainty, and constant work. – I think all people have this. Or, at least me, project this to humanity.
  • If you think of it as a pyramid, there are three levels of the life force: relationship with your physical body, connection with other people, and relationship with yourself. – Something to think about.

It’s a nice movie, perhaps not 10/10, but 9/10, yet I don’t think it’s for everybody. You might not enjoy the emotions it puts you through, but the ideas you will get at the end of the experience could be nice.

Seaside Stories – The third play I enjoyed watching a lot, without even seeing it

Ștefan Mihai, Theodor Șoptelea

I liked two plays a lot until recently:

What do these two plays have in common? They’re highly engaging and entertaining. In this case, the main emotion is humor, but it’s not 100% just that.

Yesterday evening I saw Seaside Stories – Teatrul de Stat Constanța.

My feedback on it?

Burning calories by playing chess

Don Sniegowski - Game on!

Have a look at this:

In 2004, winner Rustam Kasimdzhanov walked away from the six-game world championship having lost 17 pounds. In October 2018, Polar, a U.S.-based company that tracks heart rates, monitored chess players during a tournament and found that 21-year-old Russian grandmaster Mikhail Antipov had burned 560 calories in two hours of sitting and playing chess – or roughly what Roger Federer would burn in an hour of singles tennis.

Why grandmasters like Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana lose weight playing chess.

It seems that chess can help with burning calories. The brain, it seems, actually does some calorie-burning efforts.

I would love to think more on the matter, but I’m afraid I might lose some weight by doing so!

On having humor

Două filme - Joker + Parasite

Research shows that using humor can help encourage others to want interact with you in the future.
People who incorporate levity in presentations are more likely to be seen as competent and confident.
You don’t have to be naturally hilarious to use humor at work. Being a “humor appreciator” may also yield some benefits.
It’s important to stick to positive approaches to humor that don’t “punch down.”

Humor boosts your credibility at work (and that’s no joke) – Work Life by Atlassian

So, there you go! You should aim to be funnier, making people laugh.

I always thought that jokes make people lower their aggressiveness and might like you (Despre râs – trei lucruri – Blog de Olivian Breda).

Now, I have a confirmation of this.

When I don’t know! makes you smarter

Marcin Krawczyk - After your 40's you know right from wrong

A lot of people seem to be afraid to say „I don’t know” / „I’m not sure”.

Also, asking questions like „Would you prefer…?”.

To me, this is a sign of strength, not weakness.

I think more people should say, „I don’t know!” and set themselves open to finding out new things rather than appearing to be omniscient.
