Rand Fishkin, Moz: Google cares more about people reading something, than about people sharing something

From the latest WhiteBoard Friday: I think Google is honest when they tell us, „We don’t look at social shares to determine rankings.” I think what Google sees is something Chartbeat showed a few years ago. This was another excellent study that I encourage you to check out. Chartbeat basically analyzed engagement on socially shared content. What they saw was a plot that looks like this. Very, very few social articles have high read time. Even the ones that have lots of social sharing have very little read time. It turns out a ton of things that people share socially on the Web, they don’t read at all. They may click Retweet. They may even include the URL. They might share it on Facebook. But they, themselves, may never have even visited that content. Sounds crazy, but I bet you’ve done it. I bet I’ve done it. I bet I’ve been like well, you know, it was probably a good edition of Whiteboard Friday, I’ll go share it out, having not yet watched the video and seen whether I did a good job or not. That’s just the way of the Web. I think Google cares much more about the engagement than they do about the social share counts themselves.

Prezentarea de tooluri folositoare in PPC. Eu am fost doar la sesiunile de PPC in ziua a doua insa in prima zi am reusit sa prind si cateva insighturi de la SEO si content: contentul trebuie sa crawlable , faptul ca o persoana are deja instalata aplicatia ta te ajuta sa cresti in rank etc. (photo credits)

Seth Godin: I believe that everyone should write in public. Get a blog. Or use Squidoo or Tumblr or a microblogging site. Use an alias if you like. Turn off comments, certainly–you don’t need more criticism, you need more writing. Do it every day. Every single day. Not a diary, not fiction, but analysis. Clear, crisp, honest writing about what you see in the world. Or want to see. Or teach (in writing). Tell us how to do something. (Sursa ») Știrea:  Despite previously saying the social network wasn’t planning to build a “dislike” button, CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed during a Tuesday Q&A session that his company has indeed been working on one. “I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years,” Zuckerberg said. “Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it.” (Sursa »)

The best way to learn online marketing

The best way to learn online marketing

TL;DR: As far as I suggest, you should learn online marketing by practicing, not by attending classes.

There are two ways of learning programming:

  • Studying for 4 years in a College and then practicing somewhere.
  • Learning by doing. You get a problem, you learn how to solve it, and you increase, step-by-step, the difficulty of programming.

If you’re 18, I think it’s a good idea to learn programming by going to a college. If you’re 30, and want to work full-time, though, I think the former option is the better one. You’ll not be as great a programmer in the beginning, but you’ll learn on the fly.

The freemium model in selling information

The freemium model in selling information

If you want to provide information for a premium, using online tools, I suggest you use a freemium model. This means offering information: For free, until you establish yourself as a a brand: Publish things so good / long / impressive, they can’t ignore you & you become a brand with that content. Ask for money, once you are a brand: Now you can sell other things: Consultancy. Conferences. Books. The solution? Offer free until you become a brand & then charge for premium.

How to set the Voice and Tone for a web site? The answer – try MailChimp’s solution!

I like MailChimp‘s messages a lot. For example, right as you enter the web site, it says: „Send Better Email”. If you want to join, it tells you: „Join more than 8 million people who use MailChimp to design and send 600 million emails every day.”, and, more, the button invites you to sign up for free. The journey continues when you plan to register: „Sign up in 30 seconds. No credit card required.”. Even after you create your account, messages like these are commonplace: „Send a lovely HTML email along with a plain-text alternative version.” or „This is your moment of glory!” (prior to sending a campaign). Initially, I thought all the logic behind is to try and make things a bit friendlier, funnier and pleasant. I’ve seen some other CRO (conversion rate optimization) recommending practices like this. And, then, I go to this web site: Voice and Tone » Now, I know there’s much more to these message than I previously thought. It looks like there’s quite a science behind this, with user’s feelings including things like „Curiosity / Interest / Optimism” and so on. I suggest you have a look at the web site and consider adding similar things to your web site. Voice and Tone »

Best time to tweet

Based on New Research: The Best Time to Tweet for Clicks, Retweets, and Replies: „Tweets sent between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. earn the most clicks on average” „Tweets sent between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. earn the most total engagement on average” „Tweets sent at the 9:00 p.m. hour in the U.S. earn the most retweets and favorites on average” „When analyzing our tweet data, I did not control for these extraneous factors, and I’m sorry for the confusion this has caused. Analyzing the data as-is means that, when you see a result of 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. as the hour in which tweets receive the most clicks, this is an average amount of clicks for all of the tweets in that particular timezone. This is an important consideration for a couple reasons: – It means that large accounts with many followers have an unusually large influence on the average amount of clicks per tweet. – Especially in the early morning hours, these large accounts have a disproportionate effect on the average amount of clicks because of both the high follower count and the relatively low tweet volume from many of the other Twitter accounts.”
