Power and courage

I keep asking myself – where does power end and where courage starts?

For example, if I adhere to my own set of rules and virtues, I have power.

But if I bend the rules and try to exit my own carcass, I have courage.

If I am polite, and I value politeness, I have power.

But if I stand up, fight for others’ (and mine) rights, initiate things, I have courage.

Sometimes, by having courage, you break some rules.

To me, it’s not that simple to say – this is power (doing the right thing) vs. this is courage (doing the thing that is hard to do).

Sometimes, the courage is to shut up. At times, the courage is in speaking.

Sometimes, you have power by speaking. At times, you have power by keeping quiet.

  1. I may be wrong, but I think you mean strength, not power (they’re very slightly different).

As to strength vs courage, the difference is whether fear is involved. E.g. when it comes of things like resisting vices or respecting personal rules, that is strength (you’re strong enough to choose to resist temptations etc, but there’s no fear factor involved).

However, when you stand up for others, i.e. leave your comfort zone in any way, that involves at least some modicum of fear (e.g. the fear of the consequences, the fear of how others will react, etc). And when you choose to do things despite that fear, that is courage.
