Marco- and Micro- events

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center - Marshall, Mirrors, and Mission History with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope

I know people who worry about wars, pandemics, economics, and other things at a macro level.

For some reason or another, they also make mistakes at the micro-level.

I’m much more interested in tactics than in strategy.

It doesn’t take a lot of information to know what to do at a strategy level.

It takes a lot of information to know what to do at a micro-level.

My practical tip? Know just a bit of strategy and lots of tactics.

Why I don’t review bad books/places/movies/music

I don't judge people on their worst mistakes.

Sometimes, I read warnings – „This is a poor movie/book/song/place.”

The thing is, if we consider the Pareto principle to be true, most of the things out there are of poor quality.

If 80% of things are bad, and out of the good 20, another 80% is not that great, it brings little value to mention what is of poor quality.

Also, it doesn’t take much to determine whether a movie is worth seeing or not.

On the other hand, if we are talking about something debatable and with lots of pros/cons, in this case, yes, I want to hear some opinions.

For example, choosing to spend a vacation in a place brings a lot of factors to weigh in.

Again, choosing to live in a place/country requires many things to look at.

Sure, it’s not a bad thing to mention „Oh, you’ll waste your time by watching the movie X”.

OK, that’s not bad, although I could surely get that information elsewhere.

Also, if I can, I will write to the author of something and give them negative feedback (not in all cases, of course; otherwise, I’d spend my waking time writing complaint emails).

Also, I prefer not to give definitive solutions – This movie is 100% good/bad. It might be that I like it/dislike it, but it’s almost certainly not 100% good/bad.

It’s also of low importance. The reviews of the Napoleon movie tend to be negative. But there are other criteria for watching the movie.

In conclusion, I prefer to give positive, not negative, recommendations and debate the „big” themes.

Sorry, but

Cindy Ford - Those Who Don’t Accept the Truth Aren’t Fit for Salvation

I hear people saying, „Sorry, but I need to tell you,” „Truth be told,” and „Forgive me, but I must say this.”

The problem? There is no sorry-ness, no actual need to be forgiven, and no one wants to hear the truth.

These are just conventions for having duplicity.

You can’t say anything you can imagine by simply specifying, „Forgive me for saying this.” You aren’t asking for forgiveness; you ask for permission not to care.

The alternative? For example, if you need to say, „Sorry for the off-topic, but …”, just say, „I know I’m off-topic, but this is important. Here goes:”.

Dark web and SEO

Thomas Hawk - Google

Can you put a link to the site on the dark web for SEO purposes?

Let’s take this statement:

„The term dark web refers to encrypted online content that is not indexed by conventional search engines. Accessing the dark web can only be done using specific browsers, such as TOR Browser.”

Source: What Is the Dark Web and Should You Access It?

If the statement is true, in this case, Google will not see the link so it doesn’t affect you.

What happens if Google can access the link? If Google somehow sees the link, it matters a lot which site puts the link. It may be a legitimate site, and then the link helps, or it may be a dubious site, which at best does no harm, and at worst, if there are a lot of such sites that link, risk a penalty.

Where to live in Europe?

Elias Rovielo - The Tebinquiche Lagoon (Laguna Tebinquiche) at 2,400 meters (8,000 ft) above sea level, the Salar de Atacama, the Atacama Desert, San Pedro de Atacama, Chile

My advice for picking a place to live in Europe is to find someplace with the sea next to it, either the Mediterranean or the Black Sea. If you like mountains, generally you can find solutions to go for a day or two, but if you live by the sea, you can get a good experience in the summer.

You can choose a small town, like I did. It’s nice if that place is also relatively close to a large city, so you can enjoy cultural experiences.

Knowing English in Romania

Follow-up: Conference - Norm and usage in the Romanian language II DOOM3 Case Study (2023.05.15, Université Libre de Bruxelles)

In Romania we used pirated software for a long, so big companies didn’t have the incentive to translate interfaces in Romanian. Also, it was cheaper to make a subtitled movie than a dubbed one. For these two reasons, for a lot of time, if you were in IT, you were forced to learn English.

What seemed initially a curse proved to be a blessing because nowadays a lot of people know English.
