SEO is not IT

IT is: Information technology (IT) is the acquisition, processing, storage and dissemination of vocal, pictorial, textual and numerical information by a microelectronics-based combination of computing and telecommunications. SEO is: Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the „natural” or un-paid („organic” or „algorithmic”) search results. Yet, I get to see this confusion quite often – „You’re in IT”; I’m not; I may be in marketing, PR, communication, IT also; but never just IT; IT is, actually, quite a small part of things. Sure, I am at a computer most of the time, sure, I do know IT things, have an idea on a lot of processes in IT; but that’s not my specialization.

The most important resource for SEO – Search Ranking Factors – now in its 2011 edition

I consider Search Ranking Factors by SEOmoz the most relevant resource for SEO, since it gives you reasons on why do a certain activity, rather than another. It can help you a lot in putting priorities – „this is important and easy to do, while this is neither important, nor easy to do”. And, following this, you know how to take a decision.

The one solution for work – intense

Seth GODIN says: „If you’re going to work… work hard.” Nothing fancy. How to implement this? Don’t have a smartphone; you’ll work in a non-intense way, most of the time, instead of focusing on working very intense in smaller period of times; instead, get a voice & SMS phone; Don’t have a laptop; you’ll have to use a small monitor (instead of a 22+ inches one), a small keyboard (instead of a full-size one), and, in most cases, a lower capabilities machine; instead, get a regular PC; and for the same powers as a laptop, you’ll pay less, or for the same money, you’ll get a better machine; Have times for work and times for leisure; in working time don’t check mail, don’t go on Facebook, avoid doing anything else but work; when leisure time, have fun; but split the two; Do you have any other solutions?

A question for Facebook, with my answer

Note: If you have a question on how to set a custom username, see How To Create Custom Username (URL) For Facebook Fan Page.

From time to time a new application for Facebook claims to present its users the number of people who viewed the personal profile of the person using the application. So, it seems that the biggest question on Facebook is „Who viewed my profile?”

The bad news is that no such application, event, web site can present a good answer to the question, since Facebook’s privacy settings prevent a third party application to providing such an answer.

The good news is  you can use the data provided by Facebook itself to answer the dilemma.
