„Let me sleep on it”

Sometimes, you’re asked for a decision – do you want this job? Do you want to take this trip? Would you like to sell your (car/apartment) for X money? Would you consider this new philosophy?

Sometimes, I know when there’s something big coming, other times I don’t; what I found from my experience is:

  • Avoid taking fast decisions for important things in life, if you can postpone it;
  • Even if you can’t postpone it a lot, try & use the small time you have prior to taking a decision as best as you can;
  • Sleep on it – I find that sleep is a very good adviser, and I can think clearly in the morning, rather than, let’s say, in the evening;
  • Research – find out what others have said (on the Internet you can find both regular users of a product, and experts; combine both solution when researching whether to buy something or not);
  • Ask – you have a network of people around you – friends, family, acquaintances; use this circle and ask for tips; you don’t have to follow each advice, but you might get new insights into your problem / thinking patterns;
  • Ask your heart, not only your mind – do you think that selling the house is a good sentimental / social / passionate decision? Does it ‘feel’ good with you?
  • Ask your mind, not only your heart – if I tell you the price is 50% off, your heart says „Uuu, I want this”; but you should be able to think logically and ask „would I pay that price corresponding to 50% of the value of the product to get that product?” Is it worth it?
Finally, after you’re sure you take a good decision, act; don’t wait too much, after the research is done, do it; act fast (after the slow thinking).
