I have previously told you about The “Romania prinde rădăcini” campaign, Dăbuleni, Olt – 2010.11.27. Now some thoughts on this.
The event took a lot of organizing:
- Police, Firemen, Ambulance – they were all there, in big numbers;
- We had supervisors (people with knowledge on planting trees);
- Transportation from Bucharest to Dăbuleni took about 4 hours go + 4 hours back;
- We got materials (shovels), trees, some food and water, some equipment;
- We have been instructed basic work procedures;
- Promotion of the event was also intense;
And all of this only for a few hundred people to go from Bucharest to Dăbuleni, stay there for 1.5 hours and only plant trees for about one hour; it may seem like a bit of unjustified effort for only small results; surely paying for some workers to do our job would have yielded better results;
Why, in spite of all these, I still think planting trees was a good idea?
- All the people got some basic education on protecting the nature;
- Every participant may have got this thought into their head: “I planted trees. And it was wonderful. What a cool experience.”;
- It was very nice to be part of a community who wants to help Romania & perhaps the planet;
- The volunteering time was nice;
- Very cool to be outside of Bucharest for some time.
All-in-all, a very nice & educative experience.
