Super cool: how can you read news on websites you frequently visit—without being disturbed by various visual elements of a specific site?

uBlock Origin

Let’s say you often visit news sites or blogs.

And, let’s say you would prefer not to see certain sections (the top of the site, the sidebar, the footer).

Maybe there are sections that bother you—”see more news,” „similar articles,” „subscribe to our newsletter,” „follow us on social media.”

I have a solution that allows you to customize the content of a page highly—you can choose not to display certain sections.

Here I’ve posted some filters that can be used ».

The solution is uBlock Origin – Chrome / Firefox.

Cite This For Me – l-am folosit foarte mult pentru bibliografie. E neplăcut că după ce adaugi 15 lucrări, trebuie să faci o bibliografie nouă, eu dau mereu copy & paste de pe site în documentul în care lucrez, ca să fiu sigur că nu se pierd.

Learning Cybersecurity

Bitdefender Total Security

OK, let’s say you’re thinking about learning Cybersecurity.

Some tips?

There is a big demand in most markets for this field, which will probably increase further.

There are very well-paid top jobs. Cybersecurity specialists are hard to find, and it’s a big opportunity to have good pay at the very top.

There are many career options to explore in this field.

You may learn well independently, but you need equipment for things like networks.

Courses and certifications can sometimes be better than college, but college certainly doesn’t hurt.

You will need to put into practice what you are learning.

Some courses:

You can also read about this on Reddit: 1, 2.

Google Search is, at times, better than the internal search of Reddit.com.

How to increase the security of online test-taking?

Kyller - Test day

My suggestions:

  • Transform the text in the questions into images.
  • Make those images impossible to OCR (use some special characters/fonts).
  • (with permission) Record the screen.
  • (with permission) Record the camera.
  • It has such a format that it focuses on answering many questions in a short time so that it focuses more on instincts and less on long-time judgment.
  • (optional) Make the test short – 5 to 10 minutes should suffice.
  • Automatically adjust the level of the next question based on the previous question.
  • (debatable) Make the test impossible to return to the previous question.
  • (debatable) Give the results of the test quickly.
  • Don’t use a multiple-choice test. Instead, make the person type the answer.
  • Have a large database of questions.
  • (debatable) Tell the persons to speak while taking the test, justifying why they chose an answer.

School contests

jesse1dog - School Prize

I took part in some hackathons. I won third prize at an event like this (something in this field, not necessarily a hackathon, but a school project with teams). Likewise, I also took part in college Olympiads and contests. In my first college, out of 2 contests, I took a prize at one. On a Master’s, I just participated once. I participated in 8 Olympiads/business plans contests in the second college. I won a local event (first place), and I took a mention in a national one, but I’m most proud that out of 8 events I took part in (local and national level), I got at least a mention at 6 of them.

What’s a tip I’d give? Focus much more on finding a new idea grounded in reality rather than on the implementation. While the implementation matters in some hackathons, in most contests, it’s the idea and presentation that sell the project.

Many times, people focus on „how should I document a project idea?” rather than finding an idea that is very interesting, novel, and practical.

How do you discover what you’re good at?

Ed Yourdon - Jets-Dolphin game, Nov 2009 - 020

How do you discover what you’re good at?

My suggested solution? Choose one thing, and do it until you get to the advanced level.

When you get there, there is a high probability you’ll like it.

Most careers tend to look unappealing in the entry-level positions.

Even two years on a job might not make it clear whether you’ll like it or not.

Get to the PRO level, and you can decide then.

By that time, you’ll likely have developed some skills well enough to transition to something else quickly.

Go to the grand final

K.H.Reichert [ ... ] - Federal press conference building | Bundespressekonferenz - Kronprinzenbrücke| Berlin - Germany

There’s a lot of emphasis on the big games – Real vs. Barcelona, the grand final of the Champions League, or the match that determines the World Champion in soccer. It’s the same with conferences – there are some big conferences everyone wants to attend.

While it’s true to some degree that the big games have a higher probability of being enchanting, great, and beautiful, there could be more minor games with great intensity.

You can have a match with 4–5 goals, while another can end with 1-0.

The same goes for conferences—yes, while a big-name conference may lead to ideas, you can likely get ideas from smaller conferences.

Pick a big one if you go to a single conference in 5 years.

But if you have a large budget, consider spending it between more events. You might get more ideas from attending multiple, smaller events.

“There are no shortcuts to any place worth going.” ― Beverly Sills

Also, if you want to prepare for a big concert, go to smaller ones, first.

It’s fine to go overseas and see Metallica in a concert, but try some local concerts, also.

Don’t go just to Metallica and Pink Floyd.

How will the world end?

Melusina Parkin - Worlds 3

I have friends who constantly give me news on the end of the world: how to build a bunker, what nuclear powers will do, and when will the next big war start.

These friends tend to spend some time reading about things but fail to act on their readings.

They don’t move to Antarctica, they don’t build a bunker, and they don’t hide in the closet.

As I view it, you’re much more likely to have issues with stability, and you could train your body equilibrium using exercises.

Also, you’re much more likely to be affected by alcohol, bad food, and not sleeping enough, much rather than what North Korea will do next.

If all you do is read what could go wrong, but you act on nothing like this, then, in my opinion, it doesn’t help.

Sure, if you think an earthquake will come, and you are a prepper and do things, that’s fine—read about earthquakes.

But if all you do is accumulate anxiety and do nothing about it, reading about a war in another part of the world does not help.

So, how will the world end? Likely, not via a catastrophe, but by falling from a ladder because you are not exercising enough and don’t have enough dexterity. Read about practical things, not things that are out of your control/interest but give you anxiety.
