I once read that for winning against the vast majority of chess players, all you need to do is know basic chess + have some good eye on tactics.
Once the level goes up a bit, though, tactics are not enough.
I find this true, also, in my life.
Yes, for certain moments in my life I could find specific and individual solutions.
Once I got into deep waters, tactics were not enough. I needed strategy.

Nu cred că îmi place un anotimp anume, dar îmi displace când se topește zăpada doar un pic, și rămâne noroi și zăpadă înmuiată, porțiuni cu gheață și porțiuni cu bălți în care nu știi cât de mult va intra piciorul.

E important întâi de toate să recunoști că ai o problemă. De la asta pornesc toate. Dacă nu admiți, întâi de toate că ai o problemă, nu poți crește.
Am zis la un moment dat în facultate unui tip – „Amice, viața e grea”. (citat aproximativ)
A râs și mi-a dat motive de încurajare.
Dar viața chiar e grea!
Am găsit, cu unele dificultăți, o soluție care a mers în cazul meu – să am ca motto, semnătură de email și principiu „Vei iubi viața”.
Morala? Viața chiar e grea, dar la un moment dat o vei iubi.
Am putut crește de la starea inițială („Viața e grea”), pentru că am recunoscut că e o problemă cu acel punct.
Am discutat cu o persoană foarte bine educată despre un grup de discuții ortodox. Mi-a zis că nu comunică pe acel grup pentru că consideră că pe grup nu sunt discuții de valoare. I-am zis că am postat pe grup că oamenii sunt idioți.
Mi-a zis că e impoliticos gestul. Nu poți zice asta!
OK, de acord, era foarte impoliticos, una din greșelile tinereții mele.
Dar dacă nu pui la bază „domnule, nu mă duce capul, ce să fac?”, nu ai cum să crești. Nu poți crește dacă totul e la tine pe modelul „sunt bun, n-am unde să mai cresc”. E necesar să îți recunoști erorile.
Oricum, cea mai mare emoție a fost la mine când am avut primul HC (anii 91), apoi primul PC (1997), apoi primul casetofon/combină (prin 1994-1995), apoi primul combo între televizor color + cablu (prin 1997/1998), apoi acces la Internet (2001). Ordinea e descrescătoare de la cea mai mare emoție la cea mai mică.
Internetul e magic!
Sometimes, I play chess. Yet, I don’t play a lot with people I know, I’m not motivated by this. In primary school, I and most of my friends had similar opportunities with being good in school. Most pupils preferred not to learn, I preferred to learn. I think genetics and parents also play a huge role, but I attribute a big part of my success in school to the time I put in learning, reading, educating myself.
So, if I were to be better than someone else in school, I would have been proud.
Yet, I never compared with top athletes. They also wouldn’t want to compare with me, as winning against a beginner would bring them no glory, while a potential (although very improbable) loss would bring them shame. It seems natural to compare yourself with people who have the same opportunities as yourself.
Yet, in the modern-day, this is not the case. I may play much more than others, or much less than others. Generally, there’s a big discrepancy in the time invested in the game.
I know one person who really wanted to beat me at chess, claimed to have trained a lot and won 3-1 (something in that area). But I hadn’t played, during that time, for a long time, while he claimed to have trained a lot.
If we compare professional players, they go „all in”. If they choose to spend 10 or 1 hour per day training, it’s their choice, and they’ll get results based on that. If one player decides to only train a little, while others invest in mental and physical education, that’s fair game.
But, in amateur chess, my one hour of training is not the same as others.

I sold tickets to an event I co-organized ».
Initially, for a few years, we organized them for free. When we started asking for money, people were reluctant to pay us. After a while, we got to a similar number of participants for the premium editions as for the free ones. Most of the selling argument was „You know us well, already”, we didn’t need to use much persuasion.
We did use some packages, like buying multiple tickets with a discount.
I also helped with selling a book online, in which I wrote two chapters.
We put the first chapter online for free, some testimonials, and arranged to have an option to buy online.
