Too many options

Harry McGregor - Member’s Choice: Games or Game Pieces

On eMAG website you have all kinds of vouchers, prices with and without Genius, different delivery prices.

This is a typical strategy for telephone operators in Romania, where you don’t know exactly how many minutes and Gigabytes you have each month.

After a while, it might become difficult to know which package you are assigned.

The confusion helps with sales, but it might make visitors unhappy.

Prejudice

On "Pride & Prejudice" (2005)

I once attended a book exposition fair, and I heard a participant saying something in the line of: „Why is well-known person X invited to speak to a book exposition, the person is not a real writer?”.

When I was a photographer, some people gave me superior looks – why do I do that? Taking photos is easy, thus I must be a very simple person, not capable of doing more in life.

After arriving in London, in 2015, my status changed, I suddenly had two heads and 4 hands. People, suddenly, became interested in my position in London.

Prejudice.

It’s helpful for survival, not so pleasant when people judge you in the blink of an eye, giving you a superior look.

It’s really true – Pride and Prejudice – Wikipedia.

Arranging 1,000 students

syahrul_rusdy - Smile

When I studied Economics in college, we were hundreds of students.

We were divided into a few large groups (series A, B, C, and D – for courses) and, within those big series, there were smaller groups for seminars (groups 1, 2, etc.).

The great thing, which I really liked – we were divided in such a way that in almost all groups there was a person whose name started with A/B, another one with C/D, and so on.

We weren’t, in a small group, all students with names like Ana, Anca, Alin – we had Ana, Denisa, Matei and so on.

I am saying this because I knew some students who were studying at other faculties, and, in there, they were split into groups in which everyone’s names started with the same letter.

Imagine the problem of remembering 20 colleagues whose names start with the same letter, and, for the teachers, remembering students’ names.

But, since you came to the doctor, do not return unhealed!

Thomas Hawk - Doctor Banksy

„Ia seama, dar, de vreme ce ai venit la doctor, să nu te întorci nevindecat” / „But, since you came to the doctor, do not return unhealed!” (via »)

Sometimes, I’m put in a position to answer to others’ questions.

And the optimal thing to do is pay attention, give a good reply, focus on being useful.

That’s the decent thing to do.

But, sometimes, I reply in a hurry and give an answer that could be further improved.

Most people do this at some point, to a greater or lesser extent.

Still, it’s a thing to be avoided.

Are you the doctor? Then act like one!

Student NGOs admissions

Damien Walmsley - 20180510_My students

Some NGOs allow signing up, mostly in the autumn.

Why not sign up for NGOs in the fall only?

Because you should admit people all year round.

If I would like to start helping in April, I should be able to do so.

Of course, there is some training that needs to take place – for that you could allow people joining in April, and doing the training when there’s a larger group.

Or you could make some videos for online training.

I’m all in favor of allowing signing up all year round.

Second-hand products

Terry Hassan - Turkish Products

On the sale of used products – some people do not understand that the sale price is actually determined by the price at which you find a Black Friday (or other discount time) product.

If I sell a laptop for 1,500 lei, it matters what I can buy for that Black Friday (or other price cut time frame) money.

And the new product also has a warranty, has never been used, and is clearly more valuable than a second-hand product.

I don’t mind buying used products, it’s just that some people compare an old product with the price of a regular new product.

But I don’t want to buy at a top price, I’ll wait for a discount period.

Changing people’s minds

Susan Jane Golding - The Listeners

Sometimes, you might try in vain to change the person’s perspective.

I know people who, when you get their attention on something, start with „No,” and continue with a logic that cancels everything you said.

What to change if the message does not enter their point of view?

The solution? Instead of trying to change a person’s perspective, try to focus mostly on getting the message sent.

Listen carefully to what the person says and try to see if there are flaws in their logic that you can point out.

If X says something, and you cross your arms and start with „No, you’re wrong”, the chances of success are small.

But we plan to!

Andy - Blue Planet, Copenhagen

Sometimes, in the news, you read news of things that are about to happen – „X will happen in the following timeframe”.

In my opinion, you should read the news that is certain, not legal promises.

Try not to read about what tanks Russia has currently has. Postpone this a bit, and read about tanks after the invasion, not before.

Sometimes, it’s useful to know what will happen beforehand – an invasion in Ukraine will affect you in various ways. A law that will pass will impact you, possibly quite directly. A problem with international shipping will have its effects on you. A problem with manufacturing certain IT components might have a domino effect.

Yet, as I see it, it’s better to focus on „past” news, not on „future” ones.

Dacă X poate, poți și tu!

John Bennett - CULL-TIME-SORRY

„Dacă X poate, poți și tu!” – mi se pare atât de jignitor față de X. „X din județul Y, de la țară”, „X cu educația Z, foarte slabă, mai slabă ca a ta”, „X cu formarea F, sub a ta”. Privire superioară.

Citesc uneori în presă știri precum cele de mai sus, în care, aparent, ești încurajat – o persoană care nu avut totul pus pe tavă a reușit. Tu de ce nu ai putea?

Simplificarea aceasta nu consider că aduce atât de multă valoare.
