Not my job

Learn from mistakes

Sometimes, I talk to customer support people.

From time to time, I encounter issues in various systems.

Perhaps they tell their superiors, „Hmm, that’s an issue with our system; you’ll need to fix this so our clients don’t have an issue.”

I suspect most of them don’t, though, as some problems persist.

There are two issues:

  • They don’t report issues (I suspect this);
  • They don’t tell me whether they will report the issue or not. I’m never told – „Yes, we have a problem, I’ll be reporting this.”

Dr. Stelian Gomboș – Despre părintele nostru Nicolae Bordașiu – Din seria: „Oameni pe care i-am cunoscut” (audio + text)

Follow-up: Părintele Nicolae Bordașiu: 1918 – cel mai frumos an din istoria românilor.

Anger management

The Lone Ranger (2013) - IMDb https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1210819/

In the past, people tended to be more angry. Direct feedback, physical punishments, people with nerves.

I find today’s people quite a bit friendlier, happier, and with less anger and upset.

On the other hand, they can be offended by small things, like getting a call.

The thing is, society evolves, but some people don’t. It’s likely to meet an older person that has a different behavior than what’s expected in the current society.

What differentiates a succssesful man from an ordinary person?

Olaf Arndt - 7 years .. oh god !!! 😳

I often see this – a lot: „What differentiates a successful man from an ordinary person?”.

Lots of gurus will try to tell you, „Oh, the successful person does so-and-so, unlike the regular persons.”

In my opinion, a lot of such assertions are false.

Being successful is generally a combination of hard work, intelligence, human skills, motivation, and luck. It’s actually quite simple—put in the work, be motivated, have some intelligence (social and general), and hope for luck.

But it’s much cooler to imagine, „Oh, the successful people are different from me on a few specific points.”

But I consider the assertion to be false.

Sayings like „Find out here what separates the very successful people from the unsuccessful ones” are aimed only at sounding fancy, not providing value.

On nosocomial infections

Thomas Hawk - Doctor Banksy

Can you get a nosocomial infection while visiting a hospital? Possibly.

Is it better to avoid the hospital at all costs due to this? Most likely not.

When you read the news, all sorts of things get a lot of attention—plane crashes, fires, accidents.

But you are more likely to suffer from a heart issue. And heart issues are more in people’s control than some of the things that make news headlines.

The right not to have something negative happen to me

Adam Y Zhang - Life is about sharing

Sometimes, I try to be of service, and bad things happen.

Sometimes, I try to help, and people get upset.

I don’t think I have the right not to have something negative happen to me.

Even if you try to live healthy, accidents happen.

Even if you generally perform fine, some clients will be upset.

I try not to expect that life owes me something, and I have the right to receive only good things.

Asking others to pay for my birthday

Angela Sevin - The Borneo office

Some people ask for donations on their birthdays.

The result is generally good – some NGOs get more donations.

I prefer not to do it, though.

To consider that:

#1 I’m entitled to receive something, my friends owe me something;

#2 The NGO/cause I support is of better money than what my friends would generally do with their money;

are both false, at least to me.

I don’t think I’m entitled, and if my friends prefer not to help an NGO but buy ice cream, I think that the money is well spent.
