I think that the assertion: „You work with the Internet, therefore you can work from anywhere!” is only half-true.
Allow me to explain myself.
There are three major ways of working online:
- From a mobile phone; (a tablet is generally similar to this, although closer to a laptop)
- From a laptop;
- From a desktop computer; (it can run different operating systems – Linux/Windows/MacOS)
Generally, on a mobile phone you can do communication and basic browsing. You don’t have all the features of a desktop browser, and you are also unproductive. Working with Word documents or Excel files, while not 100% impossible, is difficult.
People, when they refer to „work from anywhere,” generally refer to this thought: „working from a laptop is the same as working on a desktop computer”.
I beg to differ.
Main differences:
- At home, you generally have a quiet surrounding, and it’s easy to work on a mouse and a large keyboard; when working on a laptop, on the go, you generally have some noise around you, and, also, a lot of times it’s not that easy to add keyboard/mouse;
- A mouse is much better than a trackpad, from my perspective;
- A large computer keyboard is much better than a laptop keyboard, as I see it;
- A large computer monitor, or even two monitors, is/are much better than a single, small monitor that a laptop has;
- Computers generally have better computing power than laptops;
- Finally, on a desktop computer, you can easily attach very large storage; on a laptop you generally have 1 or 2 TB of data, at most.
Sure, if you compare a desktop computer that has a small monitor, an entry-level mouse and the cheapest keyboard you can find, you only need a small computing power, and you don’t work with large files, in this case, there are not that many differences between desktop and laptop.
But if you compare a desktop computer with good properties (large monitor, good keyboard, good mouse, powerful computing power, large storage), these are some things that make working on a PC a good experience.
It’s like in the video below, there are changes – more and more benefits from a computer.
