All the world’s emotions – within me

One famous quotation by Terence (in his play Heauton Timorumenos) reads:

I am human, and I think nothing human is alien to me.

I think that’s true, that a person can have all the states, happiness, fury, envy, disgust, laughter, excitement, annoyance, and so on.

There’s one emotion, though, which is a bit more special – the innocence face-to-face with cynism.

I’ve seen this done to me, I’ve done this to others. All the emotions, all the roles, you are both the director and the tree on the stage.

It happens like this – there’s someone who is a bit naïve, and there’s some with just enough power over that person to abuse his/her position and negatively influence the naïve person.

If you want to see it on screen, see the ending of „Le notti di Cabiria” (1957).

The main character goes through some pain (spoilers!).

There are other emotions, of course. But this one is a bit special, that’s one of the reasons for which I like the movie so much.

Besides the quote by Terence, there is another one, by Saint Augustine of Hippo:

If you keep silent, keep silent by love: if you speak, speak by love; if you correct, correct by love; if you pardon, pardon by love; let love be rooted in you, and from the root nothing but good can grow.
Love and do what you will.
