I saw The Yellow Tie (2025).
First, the good part – I enjoyed the soundtrack.
Ravel – Bolero. Sergiu Celibidache 1971 – YouTube – I liked the YouTube version, but somehow I liked the one in the movie even better.
To me, reinterpreting a classical song is a bit like a Remix. Then, in the movie, they did a remix of the remix, and it was even better.
It also makes me think of Katerine – Ayo Technology – YouTube. (a remix which is better than the original; also, the main idea of the song is like the one in the movie – life and realism are more important than the virtual environment)
What didn’t I like?
The main problem was the main theme – „how to be a successful workaholic?”.
As far as I recall, at a conference (Zilele Biz), the anthropologist Vintilă Mihăilescu said that Romanians have a kind of polarity — they are both self-conscious and overly self-sufficient. It’s a double standard: they are both too self-conscious (“oh, Romanians are awful”) and too full of themselves (“ah, Romanians are the best”). At the same time, it’s a natural dual polarity — you are both things at once. The fact that you are self-conscious leads, to the same degree, to arrogance. And the other way around: arrogance leads to insecurity.
The thing is, in order to love someone, they can’t be perfect. Superman character has almost no flaws at all. To me, that makes him less likable. On the other hand, characters like Mad Max (from Fury Road), Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean), Olaf (Frozen) are funny and likeable because they have flaws. They succeed despite of their flaws, you admire them for being better than their initial condition. Superman is almost always invulnerable.
Coming back to Mr. Sergiu Celibidache, he was portrayed as having no flaws. The flows were like those in a job interview – „I work too much; I give too much attention to details; I give too much importance to work, disregarding my family life”. These are not actual flaws, and it was like this throughout the movie – the main character worked too much and had too much passion for work.
About the special effects and the visual parts of the movie – it was all nice, but a bit forced, in the idea of „We have a big budget, here’s what special things we can do with it”. Some visual aspects were unnecessary and exaggerated, in my opinion.
I could see that the movie had love of the son for the father.
I give it a 9 out of 10, for the great soundtrack and for portraying a successful Romanian character.
