Intelligence and Goodness

Thank you note

You don’t have to be a great scientist to be a good man.

You can have your flaws, but overall be a good man. That’s hard, not using the correct form of a word.

Knowing how to write properly is one way of being a good man, but not the only way.

On the other hand, you mustn’t despise the book. If you’re a nice person, yet lack some skills, don’t have a superior look at the people who know more than you. Knowledge is a form of power.

Should you read? Of course, but you should also try to be good.

“Dacă nu putem fi buni, să încercăm să fim măcar politicoşi.” ― Nicolae Steinhardt, Jurnalul fericirii

A game of chess with a good player

svklimkin - Queen of pawns

Sometime during college, I went to a chess contest.

There were some excellent players in there, including the current National Champion.

I played some games, one with a player well beyond my abilities.

I remember he was attacking a lot, perhaps even ignoring defenses and some of my moves.

He beat me so tough at chess.

Morale – if you’re very good, and know your strength, you can insist on trying to win.

How to work on tasks?

Vladimir Kud - Priority Number 1

Some principles I like to follow when working on tasks:

  • Don’t break the chain. Once I start an action, I try my best to finish it.
  • Use the calendar a lot. Prioritize tasks, work on batches.
  • Know when you’re most productive. For me, that’s the first part of the day.
  • Work on the most important things first. Prioritizing tasks should be an important part of the tasks.

On If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it – Peter Drucker

Limitless (2011)

Peter Drucker famously said, “If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it.” (via »).

I think this doesn’t apply, to some degree, when holding a journal. Or painting. Or watching movies. Or creating something.

If you’re passionate about what you do, you might be more energetic and willing to do a thing, even if you don’t measure it.

Doing medical tests

Campania de testări medicale gratuite "Nu am făcut destul" care ajunge anul acesta în 12 localități din 6 județe

Some people might want to choose Romania as a cheaper place to live in.

On the other hand, the health system is not that great.

That’s why, as I see it, one must take precautions in not getting ill.

I think that for the people who earn good money, taking some health tests would be the way to go.

Do you live in Romania? That’s fine, but test yourself for health issues, that’s one way of living longer.

Too many options

Harry McGregor - Member’s Choice: Games or Game Pieces

On eMAG website you have all kinds of vouchers, prices with and without Genius, different delivery prices.

This is a typical strategy for telephone operators in Romania, where you don’t know exactly how many minutes and Gigabytes you have each month.

After a while, it might become difficult to know which package you are assigned.

The confusion helps with sales, but it might make visitors unhappy.

Prejudice

On "Pride & Prejudice" (2005)

I once attended a book exposition fair, and I heard a participant saying something in the line of: „Why is well-known person X invited to speak to a book exposition, the person is not a real writer?”.

When I was a photographer, some people gave me superior looks – why do I do that? Taking photos is easy, thus I must be a very simple person, not capable of doing more in life.

After arriving in London, in 2015, my status changed, I suddenly had two heads and 4 hands. People, suddenly, became interested in my position in London.

Prejudice.

It’s helpful for survival, not so pleasant when people judge you in the blink of an eye, giving you a superior look.

It’s really true – Pride and Prejudice – Wikipedia.

Arranging 1,000 students

syahrul_rusdy - Smile

When I studied Economics in college, we were hundreds of students.

We were divided into a few large groups (series A, B, C, and D – for courses) and, within those big series, there were smaller groups for seminars (groups 1, 2, etc.).

The great thing, which I really liked – we were divided in such a way that in almost all groups there was a person whose name started with A/B, another one with C/D, and so on.

We weren’t, in a small group, all students with names like Ana, Anca, Alin – we had Ana, Denisa, Matei and so on.

I am saying this because I knew some students who were studying at other faculties, and, in there, they were split into groups in which everyone’s names started with the same letter.

Imagine the problem of remembering 20 colleagues whose names start with the same letter, and, for the teachers, remembering students’ names.
