It takes a lot of work

Peter - From the Stone Ages of Applied Mathematics

I once saw an interview with a national (international, maybe?) Olympian in high school.

He was asked something along the lines of „How did you get to this result?”.

His answer: It takes a lot of work, a lot of work.

I think it’s not enough.

To be successful, you need a combination of three things, in my opinion: put in a lot of work (be dedicated and serious in work), have some natural skills, and be in the right context (country, economic context, history time).

With any of these, you can get results, but a combination of two or even three makes it shine.

I don’t think that mere work solves any issue. Even in learning Mathematics, you need some talent; not anyone can become an Olympian, no matter how hard they try.

On bettting ads

FIFA World Cup 2022 venues and stadiums in Qatar

In my opinion, betting ads make football matches unwatchable.

Betting is an addiction; it brings nothing good, and just promoting them a lot makes the matches unwatchable.

I don’t want to look at a match where a lot of ads on betting occur.

It’s just unwatchable.

The problem is there is a lot of money involved, so the ads are everywhere – not just the commercials on TV, but on players’ equipment, on the stadiums, even in the name of the Football Leagues.

Since it’s impossible to skip them, the matches become unwatchable.

Emotional memories

Shlomi Kramer - eMotion

A lot of memories I have with a lot of people are based on emotions.

I remember little of what X said/did, but I remember how I reacted to their gestures.

The trouble with this? If I was 8 when I was annoyed, it doesn’t matter if now I would look at the situation differently.

It matters that when I was 8, I was happy/sad/angry at a person.

Their gesture – it’s irrelevant. Most of the time, either I can’t recall it, or it’s got a huge deformation in my mind (I don’t recall it correctly).

In conclusion – the memory is tricking me into remembering the wrong things about a person, mostly due to emotions.

It’s good to be good, but it’s not that easy

Marketing for Good - Here to help

If I’m not mistaken, I’ve listened to Bishop Robert Barron saying something along the lines of – „Hurting someone is easy. Doing evil is easy. Doing good and being good is hard.”

Also:

Nicolae Steinhardt, Jurnalul fericirii, Editura Mănăstirii Rohia, Rohia, 2005, p. 162

I remember times when I hurt people. Most of those, I deeply regret. Some of them, I regret. For some, I’m indifferent. I’m proud of none.

Also:

Arhimandritul Arsenie Papacioc

Or:

“Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.”
Brad Meltzer

Do good, no matter how hard it is.

Taking measures after an unfortunate event

Andreas Klodt - Semicircle repeats

I lived in London for one year. Multiple persons shared the same garbage bin (a special – for throwing things, not … ahem). At some point, the company taking the garbage left us a pre-written note along the lines of „We’re not taking your garbage, as it’s not properly sorted. Do this one more time next week, and you’ll pay a fine”.

It’s natural; mistakes happen. But if you enforce some way of preventing it from happening again, you can solve it in the long run.

Even if you do happen to fail one more time, if you get some sort of punishment, you’ll likely be more careful in the future.

On the other hand:

A memo to do things

Norm Wright - laptop detail

I always watch my GMail, so I tend to save tasks as drafts; they are very visible.

When I go away from home, I put on my desk (the physical one) some things that I’d like to continue when I get back.

I use the desktop (on my computer) as a temporary location both for sorting this and also to know and have a visual overview of what I’m working on.

Of course, I use Google Calendar, I have a system for tasks and organizing things.

But this simple trick – putting things where I will notice them – helps me be more organized.
