Poem: „I exaggerate” – by Olivian Breda

I exaggerate.

I take things too much further.

When I talked about Le Notti di Cabiria (1957),

I said, among other things:
„do one of the best acts a human being could ever make: laugh”

and

„After just going through a horrible mind-blowing experience, she takes from the unsuspecting happy people that surround her the joy: she laughs. She loves life. She’s happily living in the present. The laughs that change the world. She changes reality. Nothing is the same. She has a tough life, she’s hit and none of this exists in her: she laughs.”

I exaggerated.

There was no laughter in the movie. Cabiria smiles, she cries, but she doesn’t laugh.

At times, I exaggerate in other things.

It helps me convey an idea, bring up a specific point.

By exaggerating, I can have some emotion,

Manipulate, if I must,

Change the truth for a good story.

“Never let the truth get in the way of a good story.” ― Mark Twain.

Perhaps Mark Twain never said this.

Who cares? It’s a good story to believe.

Sometimes, I make approximations.

The thing is, I tend to approximate too much.

I remember one time,

In 1997, I approximated a place in Constanța

(Colegiul Național Mircea cel Bătrân, I think)

Near Tomis Store.

The thing is, according to Google Maps, the distance between these points is around 450 meters. Not that close.

Sometimes, it’s good to have an obsession,

To be a bit of a maniac,

But, there are obvious downsides to all of this.

Or, calling this piece of text a poem

Can be a vast exaggeration in itself.

I exaggerate, of course.
