Follow-up: Stirbei Palace (Buftea – Ilfov county), 2011.10.29

On 2011.10.29, I visited Știrbei Palace (Buftea – Ilfov county); the palace is 20 kilometers away from Bucharest, it was built in 1864 and has ~2,400 sqm.

Details, in Romanian:

On redemption

It may look simple:

  • You do good, you’re saved, you get redemption;
  • You do not-so-good, you’re in trouble;

Simple, right?

How about this?

“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

Let’s go back to the original algorithm:

  • You do good, you are not forgiven, (here comes the tricky part) you get a bit angry, you love God less; versus:
  • You do not-so-good, you’re forgiven, (the following may not happen) you feel good, you love God;
Both algorithms have a tricky part, and it may also be that you do good and still love God, or you may do evil and still not love Him, but it’s something to think about; and the original algorithm doesn’t provide, now, the full explanation of things; who gets to have redemption? The person who only does good things? Or the one who fails to do so? It’s, at least, unclear – now.

Optimism with a grain of salt

My favorite movie is Le Notti di Cabiria; I’ve recommended it to others; some have seen the movie as pessimistic, depressing and sad; I see it as a great hope for life / humanity / purpose of life.

The Stockdale Paradox is, in my opinion, on the same side with me.

Explained, by Jim COLLINS, the paradox goes like this (details):

You must retain faith that you will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties.
AND at the same time…
You must confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

This is, in my opinion, the essence of pretty much everything; a hear-tearing paradox leading to hope.

PS, 2018.08.03: I’ve first heard this quote at a training with Cătălin Zaharia.

Everybody’s the same

Quote by Penelope TRUNK:

We spend our lives finding differences between people to choose teachers, band mates and spouses, so our perception of peoples’ differences is exaggerated… And then Gilbert gets to grapes: “If you spend seven years studying the differences between grapes, no two will look the same to you, but really a grape is a grape.”

I like it a lot; by putting things into perspective, “a human is a human”; we’re all, pretty much, the same; OK, there are differences, but, in some perspective, not that big.

Vor dispărea cărțile în favoarea e-cărților?

Eu cred că problema se pune referitor la cum definești “carte” și cum definești “ecran”; în prezent, e clar că o carte arată într-un anume fel, și un ecran arată diferit, poți face distincția;
Ei bine, estimarea mea e că ecranele viitorilor (nu mulți) ani vor face dificilă distincția între “carte” și “ecran” – vom avea e-book reader-e care vor arăta la fel ca pagina unei cărți (deja nu suntem foarte departe);
Altfel, depinde ce înțelegi prin “carte”; un Tweet are 140 de caractere, un articol câteva zeci/sute de cuvinte, o carte zeci/sute de pagini; e imposibil să dispară o carte, dacă o definești ca o colecție de texte; textele vor rămâne, fie ca simple colecții de texte de zeci/sute de pagini;
Procesul lecturii e unic – muzica te face să imaginezi ritmuri, filmul îți transmite imagini în mișcare, lectura te face să imaginezi; așadar, mă văd în dificultatea de a înțelege cum va dispărea ceva ce nu poți obține în alt fel decât imaginând;
În fine, discurile de vinil nu au dispărut decât ca format ineficient; muzica se ascultă și astăzi, dar prin alte mijloace.

Outsoucring to China

One argument against outsourcing to China is that they provide poor quality labor; but is it a powerful argument?

I liked this comment a lot:

EN (translated by me): “When the salary difference will be high, this won’t matter. You can’t explain otherwise why so many multinational companies have transferred hundreds of thousands of jobs to India. The reality is that it’s first about the prices, the rest are details which can be surpassed”.

So, yes, there might be problems with the quality, and Romania may have an edge in here; but for a high price difference, this won’t matter anymore. Simple, isn’t it?
